Vologda State Technical University (VoSTU)- the largest technical university in the city of Vologda and the Vologda region until 2013. According to the Expert rating agency, it was included in the top 100 Russian universities. On October 24, 2013, it was renamed Vologda State University.

Story

The history of the university dates back to 1966, when a general technical faculty (SZPI) was opened in Vologda. The faculty offered only evening and correspondence courses. In 1967, the faculty was reorganized into the Vologda branch of the North-West Polytechnic Institute. There were only 2 faculties in the branch:

  • faculty of full-time education,
  • Faculty of evening and distance learning.

In November 2012, during an audit of the effectiveness of universities by the Ministry of Education and Science, the university itself was recognized as effective, and the Cherepovets branch, on the contrary, was included in the list of ineffective ones. According to the rating of the Expert agency, which was compiled almost simultaneously and contained about 40 grading criteria, VoSTU entered the top 100 Russian universities, occupying 91st place.

In December 2012, the regional government and the Ministry of Education and Science decided to merge VoSTU and Voronezh State Pedagogical University into a single classical university. The new university was to be financed from the federal budget. On August 28, 2013, by order of the Ministry of Education and Science No. 1001, Vologda State Technical University was reorganized by joining the Vologda State Pedagogical University as a structural unit. On October 24, 2013, Order No. 1182 of the Ministry of Education and Science was issued to rename Vologda State Technical University into Vologda State University. The renaming itself was carried out on November 14, 2013.
