UTKIN VLADIMIR FEDOROVICH

(17.10.1923–15.02.2000)

Vladimir Fedorovich Utkin is a prominent scientist, general designer of rockets, launch vehicles and spacecraft, twice Hero of Socialist Labor, laureate of Lenin and State Prizes, full member of the Academies of Sciences of Russia and Ukraine, the International Academy of Astronautics, President of the Academy of Cosmonautics. K.E. Tsiolkovsky, Doctor of Technical Sciences, author of over 200 scientific papers, awarded six Orders of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, two Orders of the Red Star, Patriotic War I and II degrees, "For Services to the Fatherland" I and II degrees, 14 medals. Member of the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945), deputy of the Supreme Soviet (1972-1991).

Born on October 17, 1923 in the village of Pustobor, Ryazan Region. Soon the family moved to the village of Lashma near the ancient city of Kasimov, where he spent his childhood and youth. In 1941 he graduated with honors from secondary school No. 2 in Kasimov and in August he was drafted into the ranks of the Red Army. From 1942 until the end of the war he fought on various fronts, was awarded military orders and medals.

In 1946 he entered the Leningrad Military Mechanical Institute, after which in 1952 he was sent to the Yuzhnoye design bureau in Dnepropetrovsk, where he went through all the stages of engineering growth. In 1967 he became the first deputy chief designer and chief of the design bureau, and since 1970, after the death of M.K. Yangel, headed the enterprise, first as chief, and then, since 1979, as general designer and chief of Yuzhnoye design bureau. In 1986 he became the general director and general designer of the Yuzhnoye NPO.

During this time, four strategic missile systems have been developed and put into service, several launch vehicles have been created. Recent developments include the highly efficient, environmentally friendly Zenit launch vehicle; SS-24 solid-propellant rocket; unparalleled highly effective strategic missile SS-18 ("Voyevoda" or "Satan" according to NATO classification). Developed by V.F. Utkin ensured the parity of domestic nuclear missile forces in countering US nuclear weapons. Among the achievements of the design bureau, headed by V.F. Utkin, also include the creation of multiple orbital missile warheads, the development of a unique mortar type of launch of a heavy rocket from a mine, the solution of a set of scientific and technical problems that ensure continuous combat alert of liquid-propellant missiles in a fueled state for many years, ensuring the resistance of missiles under the influence of nuclear damaging factors. explosion. The strategy of the designer-scientist V.F. Utkin - finding alternative optimal scientific and technical solutions at minimal cost.

In the field of space research, various satellites for defense and scientific purposes have been implemented. In total, more than three hundred spacecraft of the Kosmos family developed by the Yuzhnoye Design Bureau were launched into orbits, making up a significant part of the total number of satellites in this series.

V.F. Utkin took an active part in the work on the use of defense scientific and technical developments in the interests of science and the national economy: the creation of a Cyclone carrier rocket based on the SS-9 combat vehicle, the Kosmos-1500 satellite used to withdraw a caravan of ships from the ice The East Siberian Sea and became the ancestor of the well-known series of satellites "Ocean", designed to improve the safety and efficiency of navigation.

Since 1990 V.F. Utkin is the director of the Central Scientific Research Institute of Mechanical Engineering (TsNIIMash) of the Russian Aviation and Space Agency (Rosaviakosmos). With the direct participation of Vladimir Fedorovich, the Federal Space Program of Russia has been developed. The merits and experience of V.F. Utkin, authority in international scientific circles largely determined his appointment as co-chairman of a joint expert commission with NASA - the "Utkin-Stafford Commission", which exercises mutual control over the problematic issues of creating the ISS.

Vladimir Fedorovich headed the coordinating scientific and technical council of Rosaviakosmos and the Russian Academy of Sciences for research and experiments at the Mir manned station and the Russian segment of the ISS, was an active participant in international cooperation in the exploration and development of outer space. A significant event was the implementation of the extensive Intercosmos program, which was a significant contribution to the joint exploration of near-earth space by scientists from different countries. In collaboration with French scientists, the Arcad project was carried out using the Oryol satellite.

Died on February 15, 2000. Buried at the Troekurovsky cemetery in Moscow. His bust was installed in Ryazan, and a memorial to V.F. Utkin.

Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, International Academy of Astronautics, President of the Russian Academy of Cosmonautics named after K.E. Tsiolkovsky, twice Hero of Socialist Labor, laureate of Lenin and State prizes, holder of many military and highest labor awards of the USSR, Russia and Ukraine, author of 200 scientific works and many inventions ... This is generally known information about Vladimir Fedorovich Utkin (1923-2000), 90 years from the date of birth of which it was October 17, 2013.

From Zenith to Satan

Vladimir Utkin was born and spent his childhood on the Ryazan land. Graduated with honors from secondary school No. 2 in Kasimov. The graduation party, which began on June 21, 1941, ended at dawn on June 22 ... Since August 1941, the Red Army soldier Utkin has been in the ranks of the Red Army. He fought on various fronts of the Great Patriotic War, going from Volkhov to Berlin.

After demobilization in 1946 he entered the Leningrad Military Mechanical Institute. He combined his studies with work in the institute laboratory. After successfully graduating from Voenmech in 1952, he was employed in the design department of the Yuzhmash plant (Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine).

In a little over two years, a young specialist has covered the distance from a design engineer to the head of a department. In 1954, the plant began mass production of missiles - at the same time, by the way, with the previously mastered wheeled tractors. A number of ballistic missiles were developed with Utkin's participation.

During the reconstruction of the enterprise, the design department was transformed into a Special design bureau - OKB-586 (later - Design Bureau "Yuzhnoye"), and Mikhail Kuzmich Yangel was appointed chief designer. In 1971, after the death of Yangel, Vladimir Fedorovich Utkin became the chief and chief designer of the Yuzhnoye design bureau.

Among the space products that were developed at the Yuzhnoye design bureau are the Kosmos and Cyclone launch vehicles, the Kosmos-1500 satellite, and the Ocean series of satellites. A masterpiece of rocket and space technology was created under the leadership of V.F. Utkin, a two-stage launch vehicle for Zenit spacecraft operating on environmentally friendly kerosene and liquid oxygen. For the mass-energy efficiency of Zenit, foreign experts called it the highest technical achievement of the twentieth century.

A special place in the world defense technology is occupied by the missile system created at the Yuzhnoye Design Bureau - a two-stage intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) fueled by liquid fuel. The firing range, depending on the mass of the warhead, can reach 16 thousand km. She has increased survivability in a nuclear explosion and has the technical capabilities to overcome the US missile defense. Its payload mass is twice that of the American MX. To prevent the monstrous power of the engines of this rocket from damaging the silo launcher, a mortar launch was used. According to American experts, this is the world's best missile weapon.

The NATO command, being strongly impressed by the capabilities of the Soviet ICBM, assigned it its own index - Satan, that is, "Satan". The shock caused by the appearance of this missile forced the leadership of the United States of America to negotiate strategic arms limitation. And Vladimir Fedorovich himself said: "We made" Satan "so that such a weapon would never be used."

The era of TsNIIMash

In 1990 V.F. Utkin was appointed director of TsNIIMash in Korolev, Moscow Region. By this time, he was already known in the rocket and space industry. Vladimir Fedorovich headed the head research institute of the rocket and space industry during the difficult time of the collapse of the USSR. However, his work in the new location was successful, which was facilitated by long-standing contacts between the Yuzhnoye design bureau and TsNIIMash in the course of work on the creation of new-generation strategic missile systems that ensured parity of domestic nuclear forces, as well as several types of space launch vehicles and vehicles.

The Deputy General Director of TsNIIMash for Science, Academician Nikolai Apollonovich Anfimov recalls: “In all these works, Vladimir Fedorovich and the employees of Yuzhnoye Design Bureau worked closely with TsNIIMash: in the the customer's assignment, both in the course of design calculations, and during experimental development and testing of the complexes being created. Particularly close ties with the "southerners" were among the aerodynamics, strength specialists, loudspeakers and thermal engineers of the institute. All KB developments were checked in the course of calculations and experiments at TsNIIMash. "

As the director of TsNIIMash, V.F. Utkin did a lot to preserve the integrity of the leading research institute of the industry in the new economic conditions, made a significant contribution to the development of the Programs for scientific and applied research and experiments on board the orbital manned stations Mir and the ISS, became president of the Russian Academy of Cosmonautics named after K.E. Tsiolkovsky. Despite all the difficulties of the "era of change", it was during the period of Utkin's directorship at TsNIIMash that serious progress took place in some areas of work.

Convinced that the institute, along with research work, must take on the lead role in various experimental design developments, Vladimir Fedorovich launched research and development work at the institute to ensure the creation of experimental special-purpose aircraft for based on critical technologies and key elements of the new generation. As a result, TsNIIMash won a competition from one of the most authoritative design bureaus in this area of technology and received a corresponding state order, which gave work to a number of departments of the institute and related organizations.

Unique results have been achieved in matters related to the GLONASS space navigation system. These tasks are solved by the team of the Department of Navigation Satellite Systems as part of the same MCC (more precisely, MCC-M), familiar to everyone from TV reports about the next launch of cosmonauts to the Mir station or the ISS. Navigation based on artificial satellites of the Earth is rightly called the Third Scientific and Technological Revolution of the late twentieth century. Work on high-precision determination of satellite orbits based on laser measurements began in 1990. The high level of results and active participation in international cooperation led to the fact that MCC-M has been an official participant in the work of the International Earth Rotation Service since 1994.

It should be noted the very important role of V.F. Utkin in the organization of conversion development at TsNIIMash. In particular, the work of the strength divisions related to solving problems that have arisen in the nuclear industry, as well as ensuring the safety of the functioning of Russian hydroelectric facilities, is of great importance. Together with Lengidrostal, projects have been developed and more than 60 new generation sluice gates with a guaranteed service life of 100 years have been commissioned. A number of possible accidents with unpredictable catastrophic consequences were prevented.

Great rocket scientist

Vladimir Fedorovich devoted a lot of effort to international cooperation in the field of space. Under the leadership of the director of TsNIIMash, a scientific and technical examination of the safety of international space flights was organized on board the domestic manned orbital complex Mir and the International Space Station (ISS). All this was done within the framework of the joint Russian-American Utkin-Stafford commission, named after its co-chairmen.

Heading the Coordinating Scientific and Technical Council (KSTC) of Roscosmos and the Russian Academy of Sciences for research and experiments at the Mir station and the Russian segment of the ISS, Vladimir Fedorovich supervised the consideration and selection of proposals from Russian scientists to conduct research and experiments on board the orbital stations. Under the auspices of the KNTS, a large amount of work was carried out on the formation and implementation of research programs, including with the participation of international partners. Vladimir Fedorovich knew how to set tasks and organize work that was interesting to everyone.

At times, those present at the KNTS could not always immediately grasp the problem as a whole, so a debate arose. Vladimir Fedorovich always listened to the speakers to the end, and then, as it sometimes seemed, authoritarianly summed up the discussions with literally one or two capacious phrases.

Everyone who interacted with Vladimir Fedorovich during his work at TsNIIMash noted his rare commitment and clarity in work, deep knowledge and great interest not only in those areas of science and technology that he had to cover by the nature of his work. The academician was a well-educated person, he knew and loved poetry, the art of theater and cinema. Proving the expediency of making certain technical decisions, he often cited historical and literary examples, figurative comparisons, memories from his Ryazan youth, and always to the point, as additional arguments.

In 2003, a memorial plaque in memory of the great rocket scientist was unveiled on the facade of the main building of TsNIIMash. An organizing committee has been created that annually awards academician Utkin gold and silver medals.

Utkin Vladimir Fedorovich is a well-known figure in the field of Soviet and Russian rocketry. He devoted most of his life to the Yuzhnoye design bureau (Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine), having risen to the position of its chief.

Childhood of a scientist

On October 17, 1923, Vladimir Fedorovich Utkin was born in the now defunct village of Pustobor in the Ryazan region. His family was large - his parents raised four sons. Mom Anisia Efimovna devoted all her time to her children, being a housewife, and father Fyodor Dementyevich was first a factory worker in his native village, and then worked as a planner-economist at an iron foundry in the village of Lashma, where the Utkin family moved shortly after the birth of Vladimir.

The future rocket engineer graduated from high school in the ancient town of Kasimov with a round honors student. Utkin received his matriculation certificate in June 1941. And then the Great Patriotic War began ...

War

Utkin Vladimir Fedorovich, whose biography began in the twenty-third year, belonged to the generation of Soviet men who went to the front almost immediately after the prom. In October 1941 he was supposed to be eighteen years old, and in August the young man was drafted into the Red Army.

Having mastered the profession of a military telegraph operator, Utkin got into the heat of the war. First, he defended his homeland as part of the 21st separate communications regiment. After a while, he was transferred to the 49th separate communications company. From 1942 to 1945 he fought on different fronts: the First Ukrainian, Third Belorussian, Southern, Fourth Ukrainian, North Caucasian and Volkhov. I got to Berlin. He was awarded various orders and medals.

Student years

Returning home with a victory, Utkin Vladimir Fedorovich hastened to realize his dream - to get a higher education. Following the example of his older brother Alexei, he travels to the city on the Neva and enters the military mechanical institute, which forged personnel for the country's military industry. The best representatives of the industrial and technical intelligentsia of the Soviet Union studied here.

Despite the fact that Vladimir graduated from school with honors, institute knowledge was given to him with difficulty. Five years have passed since the prom, and a lot has been forgotten. In addition, the student had to earn extra money to support himself. And this did not have the best effect on my studies. First, he unloaded the wagons, and in his senior years a place was found for him in the research sector of the institute, where he underwent a very important practice. Utkin received his specialist diploma in 1952.

KB "Yuzhnoye"

As noted above, Vladimir Fedorovich Utkin devoted most of his life to work in the Yuzhnoye design bureau at a machine-building plant in Dnepropetrovsk, where he was assigned immediately after graduation. This plant was built by the whole country, and the bureau was considered one of the leading in the Union, so such a distribution could be considered a great success.

Initially, it was planned that the enterprise would produce cars, but at that moment the space campaign was gaining momentum in the Soviet Union, and the management decided to use the factory facilities for the production of rockets.

Utkin Vladimir Fedorovich began his career in the bureau as a design engineer, and continued as a senior engineer, head of a group, deputy head of a department, deputy chief designer and, finally, general director of Yuzhnoye design bureau.

In 1986, Yuzhmash was headed by the future president of Ukraine. At the same time, Vladimir Fedorovich Utkin was appointed director of the bureau. The photos of which two prominent figures are captured side by side can be found in the archives of the enterprise, in the newspapers of those years.

Professional achievements

During his work in the design bureau, Utkin proved himself to be a talented scientist and a wise leader, who knew how to find alternative scientific and technical solutions with minimal resource and time costs. This strategy was the main one in the activities of Vladimir Fedorovich.

During his tenure as chief designer and then director, Yuzhnoye distinguished itself by creating modern spacecraft and launch vehicles. Under the strict guidance of Utkin, four rocket complexes were developed, produced and put into operation, which equalized the space achievements of the Soviet Union with similar American ones.

The real pride of the bureau is the Zenit rocket, which is highly efficient, environmentally friendly and capable of launching up to twelve tons of payload into orbit; as well as the RT-23 solid-propellant unit and the R-36M super-powerful rocket, which has no analogues in the United States of America and is known as "Satan" among international military experts.

Here are listed the achievements in which a man named Vladimir Fedorovich Utkin is involved, briefly. His biography, relating to the period of his work in the design bureau, is actually much richer and deserves a whole book.

The international cooperation

Vladimir Fedorovich devoted a lot of time and effort to various international projects. One of the most productive was the large-scale Interkosmos program, within the framework of which scientists from different countries jointly explored the near-earth space. You can also remember the "Arcade" project, implemented together with the French.

Central Research Institute

The last decade of the twentieth century and his life, Vladimir Fedorovich Utkin gave work at the Central Scientific Research Institute of Mechanical Engineering of the Russian Space Agency, where he served as director. During this period, the scientist saw the main goal of his activity to transfer the country's rocket and space sphere to new "economic rails". Utkin did a lot in this direction.

He made a huge contribution to the development of programs of experiments and applied research on board the ISS and Mir. Under his strict guidance, research was carried out in various sections of the Federal Space Program of the Russian Federation. Research and design work was carried out to create special-purpose vehicles. Thanks to the agreement with the United States, technical support was provided for various problems associated with the operation of the ISS station.
